Appalachian Trail: Piazza Rock to Saddleback and the Horn
Appalachian Trail near Rangeley
Saddleback Mountain, near Rangeley, carries the Appalachian Trail across a long, open ridge above treeline. Maine Trail Finder lists the summit at 4,120 feet with views toward Katahdin and Mount Washington, and Backpacker calls it the “southernmost point from which you can see Mt. Katahdin.”
The usual overnight is short and well-loved: walk 1.8 miles in from Route 4 to the Piazza Rock Lean-to, then spend the next day on Saddleback and its neighbor, the Horn.
The hike
The trailhead is on Route 4, which Maine by Foot places 30 miles north of Farmington and 9 miles south of Rangeley. The first 1.8 miles climb about 600 feet to Piazza Rock, a giant slab jutting from the hillside that Maine by Foot says looks like “a drawbridge” or “an extraterrestrial space ship” from below. A side trail just past the Piazza Rock junction leads to the lean-to and camping area. Beyond the lean-to are the Caves, which Maine by Foot describes as “an enormous pile of huge rocks that tumbled down the slope,” with a blazed route through and over the boulders.
Backpacker’s 2013 trip description calls the Piazza Rock Lean-to a “large shelter with skylight near the Piazza Rock” that sleeps eight, with a “double privy with cribbage board.”
North of camp, Maine Trail Finder says the AT passes along the west shore of Ethel Pond and then the east shore of Eddy Pond, crossing a small bog, before climbing to the open ridge. The final mile to the summit crosses “glacially smoothed bedrock,” and Maine Trail Finder urges hikers to be “very aware of past, present, and predicted weather” and to follow the rock cairns. Saddleback’s summit is about 5.7 miles from Route 4 (11.4 miles round trip), and the Horn adds 1.7 miles each way, for a total of about 14.8 miles.
Beyond the Horn, the AT continues over Saddleback Junior toward the Poplar Ridge Lean-to. A Views from the Top hiker who walked from Route 4 to Caribou Valley Road tented at Piazza Rock the first night and at Poplar Ridge the next two, and called the day over Saddleback, the Horn, and Saddleback Junior “probably my favorite part of this trip,” with Labrador tea and cotton sedge blooming in the alpine zone. He also “highly recommend[ed]” Piazza Rock. Backpacker’s longer route continues past the Spaulding Mountain Lean-to to Caribou Valley Road, with side trails to Mount Abraham and Sugarloaf.
For another high Maine ridge on the AT, see the Bigelow Range.
Tips
- Turn around in bad weather. Saddleback’s open ridge is exposed for about a mile.
- Explore the Caves past the lean-to on your first evening; the blazed route scrambles over boulders.
- Bring a stove. Fires are allowed only in the ring at the Piazza Rock Lean-to.
- Fill up before the ridge. Plan on carrying the day’s water above the ponds.
Camping
Camping is not allowed above treeline on Saddleback. Maine Trail Finder says the Piazza Rock Lean-to is the only place in this section where overnight stays are allowed, and fires are allowed only in its fireplace ring; stoves are fine elsewhere. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s summary of Maine rules also limits campfires to designated sites. Backpacker lists the Poplar Ridge Lean-to (sleeps six) and Spaulding Mountain Lean-to (sleeps eight) farther north.
Inside Intel: Piazza Rock is the pick in both trip descriptions read for this page. The Views from the Top hiker tented there and recommended it, and Backpacker points out the lean-to’s skylight and its double privy with a cribbage board.
