Top Backpacking Trails in Iowa
4 routes. Each page shows when we last checked it. Updated October 2026.
Iowa has little backpacking, and this site covers only four trips. Two are in Yellow River State Forest in the northeast, where trails climb steep, wooded bluffs above trout streams near the Mississippi River. The DNR says the Yellow River State Forest Backpack Trail has five backpack areas, and Backpacker described a 14.3-mile loop in 2012, and the short walk to Camp Hennessy in the Paint Rock Unit is about 3 miles round trip. In southern Iowa, the Stephens State Forest Woodburn Backpack Trail has about 6 miles of rolling trail with five pack-in sites. In the west, Preparation Canyon State Park has ten hike-in sites on steep loess ridges, which the DNR calls some of the only hike-in sites in the state park system.
These are mostly short overnights at designated sites, not long wilderness routes. The DNR describes the backpack sites as first come, first served, with sign-in at Yellow River headquarters and self-registration at Preparation Canyon. Sites have fire rings but no restrooms, and drinking water is mostly at or near trailheads, so plan to carry it.
The DNR suggests late spring and early fall for Stephens, and warns of quick heat in spring and summer at Preparation Canyon. Hunting is allowed in the state forests, with deer and fall turkey seasons running from October into January, so wear blaze orange then. Trails can be muddy and creeks hard to cross after heavy rain. Check the DNR’s park alerts page before you go.

Backpacking in Iowa: common questions
Do you need a permit to backpack in Iowa?
No permit system was found for the trips on this site, but each area has its own sign-in rules. The Iowa DNR says backpack campers at Yellow River State Forest must sign in at forest headquarters before camping, and Preparation Canyon uses self-registration at the east parking lot. At Stephens State Forest's Woodburn Unit, the DNR says the pack-in sites have no fee and are first come, first served.
Can you reserve backpack campsites in Iowa?
Not at the backpack sites on this site. The DNR describes the backpack areas at Yellow River, the Woodburn pack-in sites at Stephens, and the hike-in sites at Preparation Canyon as first come, first served. The drive-in campgrounds at Yellow River and Stephens are different: the DNR says they are 100% reservable and require a reservation.
Can you camp anywhere in Iowa's state forests?
No. Iowa's state forest rules allow camping only in established areas in Shimek, Stephens, and Yellow River state forests, and backpack camping areas are marked with signs and have fire rings. At Preparation Canyon State Park, camping is at the ten hike-in sites. Check with the forest or park office before you go.
When is the best time to backpack in Iowa?
The DNR suggests late spring, after turkey season, and early fall, before deer season, for the Stephens State Forest trip, and says summer hikers should expect bugs. At Preparation Canyon, the DNR warns that spring and summer days heat up quickly and advises starting early with plenty of water. Trails can be muddy and stream crossings hard to ford after heavy rain.
Is it safe to backpack in Iowa during hunting season?
Hunting is allowed in the state forests on this site; the DNR says it's permitted everywhere in Yellow River State Forest except the campgrounds. For 2026-27, the DNR lists deer archery from October 1 to December 4, an early muzzleloader season October 17 to 25, shotgun seasons December 5 to 9 and December 12 to 20, and fall turkey from October 12 to December 4. The DNR includes blaze orange on its backpacking packing list for hunting season, so check current dates before a fall or spring trip.
